Vendor Spotlight | DJ Spiraldive

At the Cliff House, we know the value of being able to keep guests engaged and entertained during an event. Nick Metzger, colloquially known as DJ Spiraldive, is truly a one-of-a-kind DJ with a unique ability to appeal to all ages, genres, and styles. His approach to turntabling is done with personality and eclectic flair - all while providing an experience you won’t soon forget. Whether it is a wedding or private event, Nick is a trustworthy source for a great time.

We are so excited to share more today about Nick’s experience and where his passion for music has brought him on his journey as DJ Spiraldive.

From Nick:

What sets me apart from most other DJs is I'm an old school all-vinyl DJ. I started collecting vinyl in 2002 and was always interested in learning how to DJ but never quite knew where or how to start. That all changed 5-6 years ago when I was working at Spinster Records here in Oak Cliff. My boss at the time had a DJ setup and encouraged me to practice and learn on his turntables and even set me up with my first gigs. After honing my craft, I started spinning weddings approximately 4 years ago and have been at it ever since. The journey so far has been nothing but positive. I truly love spinning weddings because guests are always in a good mood and are primed to dance and have fun. There's nothing better than looking out over my turntables and seeing everyone dancing the whole night.

This might sound obvious, but music inspires me! Every genre, every era, every artist has a unique story and history and fits into a framework of a specific moment in time. To be able to weave those moments and frameworks into a musical tapestry throughout the night is so inspiring. I never learned an instrument myself (although I certainly tried a few times) but as a huge music aficionado I try to find the most interesting/exciting elements from every genre to incorporate into my set.

Oh man, how can I pick just one memorable moment at the Cliff House? I've spun more weddings at the Cliff House than anywhere in Dallas at this point--at least 10, I think. I will say this: I always have an amazing time at the Cliff House. I think it is designed almost perfectly in terms of layout and room space, so when the dance floor gets going it doesn't stop! Plus, with all the wood in the room the acoustics are always on point.

Besides the all-vinyl part of my style (which is definitely my most unique feature) I would say my approach to DJing is very much eclectic. I love to throw a little bit of everything in the proverbial blender and mix it up. Everything from '60s soul, '70s disco, '80s new wave, '90s hip-hop, and of course current modern artists, too. I hate getting bogged down in any one genre for more than a song or two because I don't like to be predictable. Keeping the crowd guessing what's going to come next and keeping them on their toes is not only fun for me but it keeps the dance floor more lively...and more importantly packed.

I love to get people on the dance floor and keep them there the whole night! If I look up from my turntables and people are dancing and laughing and singing along to my song selections, it makes me so happy because I know I'm doing my job well.

My wife and I run a vintage furniture company called Land of Lorenzo so a lot of my non-DJ time is spent sourcing vintage furniture for that endeavor. I also play tennis once or twice a week with friends. And if I'm just chilling at home, I'm probably listening to records or watching a movie with my wife and our two cocker spaniels Preston and Clementine.

Thank you, Nick, for sharing your story with us! We love hearing about and encouraging other’s passions, and we are so thankful when we get to see DJ Spiraldive in action at the Cliff House.
